Team Building Activities for Preteens

Break the ice or enhance communication in a group of preteens with team building activities. Team building activities also introduces newcomers to the rest of the group, giving them a chance to meet and make new friends. The activities are perfect for a social gathering or church camp for preteens. Organize teamwork activities with a few supplies and some ideas to help them learn to work together as a group or team.
  1. Balloon Activities

    • Have all the preteens stand in a circle and toss an inflated balloon to one player. That player must go to the middle, hit the balloon in the air and call out the name of another player. That player must run to the middle and hit the balloon in the air before it hits the ground. He must call out another name, too. Tell the players not to repeat a name and keep playing until everyone has a turn. Make this a contest by dividing the players into two equal teams. The first team to finish the activity wins the game.

    Lineup Activities

    • Organize a silent lineup activity by telling the preteens they must line up in order by birth date without speaking. They must work together using hand signals to figure out the correct order. If you have a large group of players, divide them into teams and the team who completes the activity in the fastest amount of time wins the game. Instead of birth date, tell the players to lineup by shoe size or alphabetically by first or last name.

    Back-to-Back Activities

    • Ask two players to sit on the ground back-to-back and tell them to stand up without using their hands. Each time the preteens successfully stand up, add another player. For example, have three players all sitting with their backs together try to stand up. Have them try to beat their record each time. According to The Source for Youth Ministry website, their record is ten players. Another back-to-back activity is to have two players sit on the ground back-to-back and interlock elbows. Tell them to try to stand up without letting go. Have each player do this activity with everyone in the group.

    Fruit Activities

    • Divide the players into two teams. Have the players lay down on the ground, head to toe in a straight line. Each player̵7;s feet should be about 2 feet away from their teammate̵7;s head, according to the Team Building Games for Kids website. Give the first player in each team line a banana. When you say ̶0;Go,̶1; the first player must grab the banana with his feet and pass it over his head to the next player in line. That player must grab the banana with his feet and do the same. The first team to get the banana all the way down the team line wins the game. Another idea is to have the teams stand up in a straight line. Give the first player in each line an apple. The teammates must pass the apple all the way down their team line using only their necks and chins. The first team finished wins the game.
