How to Chalk a Pool Cue Like a Pro

Chalking your pool cue provides cue ball control by supplying traction to the tip. Proper chalking is especially important when English or top or bottom spin is necessary. Professionals chalk between nearly every shot. Professional tournaments typically provide high quality chalk, but if you are playing in a billiards club or bar, you may want to bring your own to ensure quality. As with many other things in life, you get what you pay for with chalk.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a chalk that matches the table felt as closely as possible. Blue chalk is often used for green tables. If you didn't bring your own, select a chalk that is not too worn out in the center. Chalk with deep divots may not apply evenly.

    • 2

Check the tip of your cue to ensure it is properly shaped and has not mushroomed. If it is slick, it may be necessary to lightly sand it using a shaping tool so it will hold chalk.

    • 3

Hold the chalk on top of the cue and brush it lightly across the tip. Turn the cue slightly to ensure all sides are chalked.

    • 4

      Repeat between each shot.
