How to Make an Electric Buzzer Skill Tester

A skill test such as one that tests your concentration and the steadiness of your hand by how carefully you can guide a metal loop over a wire course is fun. It can also be used as a game at events and fundraisers, with participants paying to try the test and winning small prizes, if they complete it successfully. You can make a skill test quickly and inexpensively with a 9-volt battery, a door buzzer, a shoebox and a few other items readily available at home improvement stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Shoe box
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Wire cutters
  • Bare wire
  • Insulated wire
  • 9-volt battery
  • Door buzzer
  • Ballpoint pen

Instructions

    • 1

Poke one hole each into the left and right corners of one of the longest sides, and the middle of the opposite side of your shoebox, using your ballpoint pen.

    • 2

Cut 3-feet of your insulated wire for the handle of your guiding loop. Pull a little of the insulation off both ends to ensure the ends are bare.

    • 3

Cut 4-inches of your bare wire and make a loop from it. Twist it onto one end of the insulated wire and seal the join with a piece of tape. The smaller the loop you make, the more difficult the game will be.

    • 4

Pass the bare end of your guiding loop from top to bottom through the hole in your shoebox in the middle of one of the long sides.

    • 5

Cut 4-feet of your bare wire and bend it into a series of curves over which you will pass the guiding loop. Increase the difficulty by making tight bends.

    • 6

Pass one end of your bare wire through your guiding loop.

    • 7

Insert the two ends into the remaining two holes in your shoebox.

    • 8

Turn the shoebox lid over and tape down one of the ends of the bare wire course.

    • 9

Place the door buzzer and 9-volt battery into the shoe box.

    • 10

Wire the loose end of the bare wire course to the door buzzer.

    • 11

Cut 2-inches of insulated wire and strip both ends to bare them. Attach one end to the door buzzer and the other to a battery terminal.

    • 12

Attach the end of the guiding loop to the other battery terminal.

    • 13

Place the lid back on the shoebox. The game is now ready to play. Guide the loop over the course. As soon as the loop touches the course, the buzzer will sound and you have lost the game.
