How to Make a Hopscotch Game

The skipping game of hopscotch dates to the early Roman Empire, with courses over 100 feet long used for military training. Soldiers in full armor and carrying field packs ran the courses to improve their footwork. These days, hopscotch boards are often found on children's playgrounds. To play the game, players throw a stone onto the appropriate square and then skip a foot into each square, skipping over the marked square. If a stone bounces out of play, the player loses a turn. Create your own hopscotch board by reusing carpet square samples.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the numbers 1 though 9 on nine carpet samples, each 2 feet square, with acrylic paint. Paint the number 10 on a piece of carpet shaped like a half-moon. Use a carpet cutter if necessary to shape the last piece. The last piece should be about 2 by 4 feet so it fits nicely in front of pieces 8 and 9. Allow the paint to dry for about a half-hour.

    • 2

Arrange the carpet square pieces in the traditional hopscotch board, which alternates between one piece and two pieces until piece 10. Piece 1 is by itself, then pieces 2 and 3 are next to one another, and so on. Use double-sided tape if necessary to keep the squares on the ground or floor.

    • 3

Use a small, smooth stone as your game piece to complete your hopscotch game setup.
