How to Lose a Game Gracefully

Although competitiveness can be a useful characteristic in many areas of life, it can also make it difficult to gracefully accept losing a game --- especially one you strongly cared about. However, it's important to demonstrate good sportsmanship in order to appear respectful and polite; consistent negativity could cause people to avoid playing games with you in the future. Fortunately, there's a straightforward set of behaviors that will demonstrate your appropriate reaction to losing.

Instructions

    • 1

Stay calm on the outside. You may not be able to control feeling angry or frustrated at the situation; however, don't allow yourself to say anything or react until you feel that the immediate negative feelings have subsided.

    • 2

Save criticism until you're away from the other players. It may be impossible to completely resist complaining about your competitors. However, this should only be done to close confidants once the other players have left.

    • 3

Congratulate your opponents. Offer to shake hands, and let the other person know that you appreciate playing him. This demonstrates friendliness and goodwill.

    • 4

Don't give excuses for losing. This is seen as unsportsmanlike, and especially so if you criticize other people on your team.
