How to Use Slivers in Magic: The Gathering

Magic the Gathering, the first collectible card game, was introduced in 1993 by Richard Garfield. In 2011, well over half a billion cards are in circulation around the world. Each player constructs a 60-card deck using the thousands of different cards that are available, which consist of creatures, spells, artifacts, and land cards. Slivers are creatures, and there are more than 70 individual slivers, each serving a different function. While most creature types are limited to one or two colors, which represent different themes in the game, slivers are creatures that appear in all colors of the game -- which makes them very versatile. To know the color of the sliver on your card, check the border around the card and the symbol in the upper, right-hand corner.

Use red as the main color of attack. These slivers are recognizable by their red border and a fireball symbol in the upper right-hand corner. They primarily focus on attack bonuses or providing ways for slivers to do direct damage to your opponent and his creatures. Use for aggressive plays.

Use blue as the color of defense. Blue slivers are identifiable by their blue borders and a raindrop symbol. Control of these slivers can provide the gift of flight or can actually deny your opponent the ability to use his cards.

Green represents growth and nature and these slivers are identifiable by their green borders and a tree symbol in the upper right-hand corner. This sliver can be very versatile and overwhelming, promoting growth by providing bonuses to attack and defense. It also spawns additional slivers that get all available bonuses.

Use black as a color of death, as it specializes in destruction and corruption. Black slivers have a black border and a skull symbol. Use these slivers to make your opponent discard cards from his hand or to destroy a powerful creature. There is usually a cost to use black but it can be overcome by using another color, usually blue (for defending yourself) or red (for your main attack).

White is primarily used for purity and health; however it can be a destructive force in its own right. These slivers are identifiable by their white borders and a sunburst symbol in the upper right-hand corner. These slivers are best for evasion and defensive abilities. Some can even give life points to their controller.
