What Is the Difference Between Zoo Tycoon 1 & Zoo Tycoon 2?

The "Zoo Tycoon" series, a PC business simulation game, lets players create and manage a zoo. The goal of the game is to have as many animals and exhibits as possible, as well as to maintain the happiness of the animals living in the zoo. As of July 2011, "Zoo Tycoon" has two installments: "Zoo Tycoon 1" and "Zoo Tycoon 2." Both games have the same platform and goal, but each has a few differences.
  1. "Zoo Tycoon 1" Game Overview

    • "Zoo Tycoon 1" was released in 2001 for Windows and Macintosh, and in 2005 it was re-released on Nintendo DS. As a tycoon game, the goal of "Zoo Tycoon 1" is to create a zoo with happy animals and happy visitors. Just like other business simulation games, you earn money through the visitors who act as buyers, and you use the money to improve your business. "Zoo Tycoon" has more than 200 varieties of animals, plants and building materials to create your zoo. To make visitors happy, you can add souvenir stores, food stands and washrooms. You also need to hire zookeepers and maintenance employees to keep the zoo clean, as well as to take care of the animals.

"Zoo Tycoon 1" Gameplay and Expansion Packs

    • There are three types of gameplay options in "Zoo Tycoon 1:" Tutorial, Scenario and Freeform. Tutorial teaches you the basics of the game, while Scenario requires you to finish or accomplish specific tasks, such as creating a specific number of cages and achieving a high level of animal happiness. The Freeform game-play mode lets you modify the amount of your starting cash and gives you an open lot to start building your zoo. "Zoo Tycoon 1" has two expansion packs: Dinosaur Digs and Marine Mania. Dinosaur Dig added prehistoric animals and items, while Marine Mania added marine animals and marine-related items.

    "Zoo Tycoon 2" Game Overview

    • "Zoo Tycoon 2" was released in 2004 for Microsoft Windows, but as of July 2011, the game can also be played on PDA, Nintendo DS, Windows Mobile and Mac OS X. The gameplay for both games are typically the same, with the player trying to earn as much as he or she can while keeping the animals and the visitors happy. New animals, building materials and environment themes have also been added.

"Zoo Tycoon 2" Gameplay and Expansion Packs

    • The Tutorial, Freeform and Scenario gameplay types were carried over from" Zoo Tycoon 1" -- with the addition of the Campaign and Challenge options during gameplay. In Campaign mode, a player starts off with an average amount of money and an average-sized zoo. The player must accomplish different tasks to unlock additional features. For example, you must be able to train dolphins or breed animals prior to unlocking items related to the task. In Challenge mode, you are given a limited amount of money to accomplish a specific task within a timeframe.

"Zoo Tycoon 2" also has more expansion packs than "Zoo Tycoon 1." Expansion packs for "Zoo Tycoon 2" include Endangered Species, African Adventure, Marine Mania, Extinct Animals and Dino Danger Pack. As the name suggests, additional animals, items and themes were added based on the title of the expansion pack.
