Harvest Hoedown Games

Celebrate the autumn season and the beauty it brings with a harvest hoedown. A hoedown works well for any birthday party or fall celebration. Ask your guests to dress in cowboy boots and comfortable plaid shirts instead of fancy party dresses. Prepare a variety of fall-themed hoedown party games for your guests to play. Encourage everyone to participate in the games by awarding prizes to each game winner.
  1. Tossing Games

    • Scatter pumpkins all over the ground and have guests try to toss rings around the pumpkins. Make your own rings using duct tape and rope or embroidery rings from a craft store. For added decoration, paint pictures of cowboys, fall leaves and cowboy boots on the pumpkins. Or, scatter random fall and hoedown-themed items on the ground, such as cowboy or cowgirl figurines, cowboy boots, Indian corn, gourds and horseshoes.

    Funny Games

    • Mark a start and finish line 25 feet apart. Give each player a gourd and have him line up at the starting line. When you say "Race," the players must roll the gourds to the finish line. The first player to cross the finish line wins the race and a prize. You can also have the players use only their feet or nose to roll the gourds. Try to find the oddest shape gourds to make rolling them even harder. For a messy and funny game, place five fruit gummies on several paper plates. Cover the gummies with whipped cream and place a plate in front of each player. The player must place their hands behind their back while trying to be the first to eat all the gummies. Tell the players they are pigs and they must make pig noises while eating the gummies.

    Hunt Games

    • Place a large bale of hay in the middle of the play area and unravel the hay. Hide several random items in the hay such as cowboy toys, coins, bobby pins and individually wrapped candies. Let two players at a time have 30 seconds to find as many items from the haystack as possible. The player who finds the most wins a prize. If you have a large bale of hay, allow all the guests 30 seconds to dig for prizes and award a prize to the player who finds the most. Alternatively, you can make two hay piles and have a two-player race to see who can find an item first.

    Shooting Games

    • Adults and children can have fun participating in shooting games. Place empty cans on a ledge or fence and give each guest a water gun to practice trying to shoot down the cans. Line 10 cans up and have each player shoot down as many cans as they can in two minutes. The guest who knocks down the most cans wins. Adjust the shooting distance depending on the ages of the players. Another idea is to use empty two-liter soda bottles and large water guns.
