What Is the 130-Card Pokemon TCG Set?

The Pokemon Trading Card Game, more commonly known as the Pokemon TCG, issues a new series of cards every few months to add variety to the game. In order to keep some of the older cards around, they are rereleased in various series. The 130-card set known as "Base Set 2" was the only release comprising only older cards.
  1. Backstory

    • In 2000, "Base Set 2" was released in North America and Europe. The purpose of "Base Set 2" was to give new players a chance to collect the out-of-print cards released in the original "Base Set" and "Jungle" series. "Base Set 2" was the fourth set of cards released, after "Base Set," "Jungle," "Fossil" and "Rocket." No new cards were released in "Base Set 2."

    Differences

    • "Base Set 2" did not contain all cards featured in "Base Set" and "Jungle." The following cards were omitted from "Base Set 2," for a variety of reasons: Koffing, Porygon, Ponyta, Revive, Devolution Spray, Clefairy Doll, Pokemon Flute, Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, Eevee, Vaporeon, Flareon, Pikachu, Jolteon, Mankey, Primeape and Rapidash. In addition, all of the holographic cards had non-holographic counterparts. The cards were exactly the same, except that the holographic versions were shiny. All "Base Set 2" cards featured a "2" printed in the upper corner of the card.

    Eligibility

    • Unfortunately, "Base Set 2" cards are no longer eligible to use in official Pokemon TCG tournaments. The only cards that can be used are the current set of cards. Check the official Pokemon website to see which set of cards is in use, and to find out when any upcoming tournaments will be happening in your area.

    Legacy

    • Although "Base Set 2" sounded like a great idea, it turned out not to be very popular --- most of the die-hard fans had already collected all the older cards and had no reason to purchase the reprints. "Base Set 2" was considered a failure and no subsequent "sequels" were released, though various cards do get reprinted every few months, with new artwork.
