Cakewalk Projects

A cake walk is a game similar to musical chairs, with the end prize being a tasty treat. Players walk around a circle of squares on the floor, with each square having a number written in it. Music is played while the group walks, and players jump on the closest number when the music stops. A ticket is pulled from a bowl with a number on it and the person standing on the number drawn gets to choose from a table filled with cakes. When organizing a cake walk, there are a number of projects to complete beforehand.
  1. Playing Area

    • You'll need to set up the playing area, which you can do in a number of ways. Draw the numbers outside on asphalt using chalk. Or use squares of papers with the numbers written on them. You can also place chairs in a circle, with a tag taped to each chair with a number written on it.

    Cake Table

    • The cake table takes prominence for this activity and you can set up a fold out table near the playing area. Cover the table with a fun, colorful tablecloth and arrange cakes on pedestals or cake plates to give them height. You can add confetti and streamers to the table to make it look festive.

    Baking

    • Sometimes players each show up with a cake to put on the table. Or you can do the baking yourself. In the week leading up to the event, bake a series of different pies, cookies, cakes and cupcakes for the table. You can also get friends or a women's group involved to help with the baking.

    Music

    • The music is an important part of the game, as it is played while players rotate around the numbers. You can make a mix tape or burn a CD of your favorite music. Make sure to use music with a peppy, jazzy beat, to create a more festive environment.
