Games to Communicate Without Talking to Each Other

Non verbal games are a fun way to connect with someone new or strengthen the bond between old friends. Nonverbal games make excellent ice breakers for large groups in a classroom or at events like a youth retreat. There are a number of games you can play that do not involve speech but rely on focus, intuition and creativity.
  1. Exquisite Corpse

    • Exquisite Corpse is played with three or more people and only requires pen and paper to play. Each person writes a statement or makes a small drawing at the top of the page. After everyone finishes, the players pass the paper to the person on the left, who makes a drawing based off the original sentence or a sentence after the original drawing. After finishing, fold the original statement or drawing at the top of the page so that it cannot be seen. Continue to pass the paper to your left, with only one statement or drawing visible at a time. Once you reach the bottom of the page, unfold all the pages and marvel at the creations each entry formed.

    The Silent Guide

    • Silent Guide is played with two people: the leader and the guide. The leader stands in front but keeps his eyes closed. The guide stands right behind the leader and acts as the eyes for the group. The object is to travel together to a predetermined location, without using speech to direct the leader which way to go. This is a good game to play with several groups of people who are all trying to get the the same spot. The game is best played if there are several challenges or obstacles to move around.

    Charades

    • Charades is a word guessing game that can be played with two or more people. A player picks a word or phrase and acts it out through pantomime and gestures while other players guess at what the word or phrase is. The person who makes a correct guess gets to take the lead at acting out a word or phrase next.

    What Am I Thinking?

    • What Am I Thinking? is like a silent version of I Spy. A player picks out an object in the room and sets her gaze in that direction, a second player tries to guess the object that the first player selected by walking up to various objects and pointing to them. This game is best played in a large or cluttered room with lots of objects to choose from.
