How to Score a Ring Toss

Although ring toss games can be played at a carnival, teachers may want to create their own ring toss game for use in the classroom. Students will benefit from playing the ring toss games as they learn firsthand about such science concepts as distance, trajectory and force. Teachers can take learning even further by scoring the ring toss so students can practice their math skills.

Paper

Instructions

  Assign each bottle or cone that you plan on using in the ring toss game a value. This should be age appropriate. For example, kindergarten children may only be able to add values of one and two, but third graders could work with values of fives and 10s.

  List each of the student's names on a piece of paper. Give each child five rings to toss.

  Instruct each student to add up his total based upon the value given to the bottles he rung, and add that figure next to her name on the piece of paper. Any rings that did not end up around a bottle do not count toward the total. For example, a ring around a five-point bottle, 10-point bottle, five-point bottle, five-point bottle and 10-point bottle would give the student a total of 35 points.

  Review the chart with the class. Challenge the children to see what the total score is for the entire class.
