Pitched Battle
Select the size of your game in the number of "points" each army will use to constitute itself. 1,000 points is a small game, but your armies can be any number of points you select.
Select the size of your battlefield. This will be determined by two factors: the size of the playing board you have available and the size of your armies. A board that is 6 feet long and 4 feet across is a standard size playing area, but you can change this to accommodate either larger armies (this area will become cramped if your armies begin to exceed 2,000 points) or your own lack of a board of this size.
Select the number of turns the game will last.
Select the scenery items, such as walls, houses, forests or lakes that will adorn the middle of your battle field. Each of these items has strategic considerations on the game so your opponent will have to agree on the placement of all these items, in addition to the length of the game, before you begin playing.
Scenarios
Select the premise for your scenario-based battle. It may be a last stand situation, where a smaller army needs to hold out against a larger one for a certain number of turns until reinforcements arrive, or whatever other situation your imagination can produce.
Select, from the scenario's premise, the objectives each army needs to achieve to win. For example: one side may simply need to survive while the other needs to completely annihilate the one that needs to survive.
Select the point values each side will have, which will depend on their objectives. In the example of a last stand scenario, the army that is trying to hold out will have significantly fewer points than the opposing force.
Select the size of the battlefield in addition to designing the scenery items and their specific locations on the battlefield.
Specify the number of turns the game will last and get your opponent to approve the details of the scenario before you begin.
