Instructions

    • 1

Create a basic concept for the math board game you're creating. Think about what levels of math the game will help the players practice, such as basic addition or long division. Decide if this will be an elimination game, or a race to the finish.

    • 2

Write the rules of the game and how it's to be played. Because this is a math game, ensure the rules require the players to solve some math problems. Decide how the players will move through the game as well. This is typically done through a random generator, such as rolling dice or drawing cards. Find ways to incorporate these generators into math problems. For example, one game you can create requires players to roll the dice, then find the sum of the two numbers before moving forward that many spaces.

    • 3

Sketch the game board for your math game. Draw the path the players will follow across the board. Also, think of a theme that can be brought out through the game board's colors and playing pieces. This might include animals, a historical setting or simply numbers.

    • 4

Play the game using the sketched drawing. The directions should be easy to follow and the game board should include all the details necessary to successfully play the game and name a winner. Finally, the game should be fun to play.

    • 5

Use a piece of cardboard to create a sturdy game board base. Glue paper on top of the cardboard base.

    • 6

Draw the game's path on the glued paper. This should include a start and finish of the game, as well as the steps players take to get there. Add a variety of colors to the game so that each step is easy to distinguish. Use as much of the space as possible, winding the path all across the game board. Write any necessary steps on the path pieces of the game, such as "Move forward three spots" or "Draw a card."

    • 7

Add adornments to the game to bring out its theme. Draw trees, animals, numbers or people on spare paper. Color them in, cut them out and glue these decorations to the game board. Create a three-dimensional game by creating pop-up characters or attaching figures around the board.

Make or find the rest of the needed supplies for the game. Create any playing cards or other pieces that are required for the game. Buy a pair of dice, if needed. Choose playing pieces that players can move across the board. These could be small toys or colorful stones -- just ensure each one looks different and that they fit on the game board.
