How to Make an Outdoor Maze

An outdoor maze can be a great party activity or a lasting feature of your house or farm. Both building and navigating outdoor mazes can provide a satisfying intellectual and physical challenge. Choose a material for your maze ahead of time based on your budget and how permanent you want the maze to be. For a long-term investment, you can plant a hedge maze or plow a corn maze, while a more temporary maze could be made out of hay bales, masking tape on the grass or even lines in a stretch of sand.

Things You'll Need

  • Graph paper
  • Masking tape or chalk
  • Materials for maze walls, such as hay bales

Instructions

    • 1

Plan the maze out on paper before you start constructing it. A simple way to create a maze is to use graph paper, mark out the outer boundaries and start and end points, then simply start drawing one-unit lines at random until the maze looks dense and complex enough. Erase the lines blocking a single path from entrance to exit, block off any short cuts, and open out sections that are entirely closed off.

    • 2

Clear the area in which you intend to build the maze. Using your pattern as a guide, create an outline of the maze on the ground in chalk or masking tape, depending on the surface.

    • 3

Build the maze walls out of the materials of your choice. For a longer-lasting maze, you can plant young hedges or carefully pile hay bales. For a more temporary maze, use cardboard boxes or garbage bags taped across a wooden, plastic or PVC frame.
