Activities and Indoor Sports for Rainy Days

Just because it's raining outside doesn't mean your kids have to pass their day lounging around and watching TV. Whether your kids like to expend large amounts of energy or focus on a small task for hours, you can create activities that will keep them intrigued and entertained for hours, regardless of the weather outside.
  1. Build a Fort

    • Building a fort out of blankets and kitchen chairs is sure to entertain most kids for hours and hours. Building a blanket fort is incredibly easy, and at the same time, it provides kids with a way to get their blood flowing. The simplest way to build your blanket fort is to drape a comforter or quilt over some tall kitchen chair and crawl underneath. Your kids can decorate the inside and spend the day inside reading and playing, as if they were out on a camping trip.

    Bake

    • If you have the time and the supplies, bake with your kids to pass the day. Whether you make cookies or pretzels, a pie or banana nut bread, find ways to incorporate your kids into the baking process. Not only will this help your kids learn about baking and measuring ingredients, but it will also create an opportunity for you to bond with your kids while creating something together.

    Hide and Go Seek

    • A jovial game of hide-and-go-seek is a perfect activity for a rainy day. The game is easy to play and entertains kids for hours. One person is selected to be the seeker; while that person closes his eyes and counts, everyone else runs and hides. It's best to create no-go zones, where kids aren't allowed to hide, such as in the basement or attic. This game can be repeated over and over again until everyone's tired out.

    Dance Party

    • You can organize and set up a dance party for you and your kids if you're stuck inside on a rainy day. Have your kids help with the decorations and the snacks -- for added fun, you and your kids can make all of the snacks from scratch -- while you prepare a dance mix. Check out bands like They Might Be Giants for danceable kids songs. Then turn off the overhead lights, turn up the tunes and get grooving.
