Video Games
Horror games are available on gaming consoles and computers. In the PlayStation title "Silent Hill," you play an everyman character who must search a spooky town for his daughter, encountering bizarre enemies along the way. The game is known for its atmospheric details, such as the sound of radio static that plays whenever an enemy appears. Capcom's long-running "Resident Evil" series will appeal if you enjoy solving puzzles while fighting hordes of zombies. In the action-adventure "Resident Evil 5" for example, available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, your character teams up with a computer or player-controlled partner to investigate horrific threats in Africa.
Board Games
Board games are very suitable for horror-themed nights because they're generally designed for group play. In "Arkham Horror," you and your friends must work together to investigate the emergence of an ancient evil on the streets of a town. The game is based on the works of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, with players battling monsters from Lovecraft's stories using a range of skills and weapons. In "Last Night on Earth," a game themed around a zombie apocalypse, players can choose whether to control human fighters or their zombie enemies. You must move around a randomly generated town board. The goal is to eliminate the enemy or simply survive.
Role-playing Games
Table-top role-playing games plunge you and a few friends into a world of horror-filled adventure; all you need to play are a few dice, pens and paper. "Call of Cthulhu," another game based on the stories of H.P. Lovecraft, is set in the post-Victorian age in America. Players assume the roles of ordinary folk, from police officers to farmers, who find themselves embroiled in plots involving old mysteries and mutant enemies. White Wolf Publishing's "The World of Darkness" is suitable if you and your friends enjoy games with a Gothic feel. This RPG is set in a world similar to the real one, except that supernatural creatures exist. Players create characters from various vampire clans or werewolf factions.
Card Games
These titles can be standalone, while some are collectible in nature. The "Vampire Diaries Card Game" is based on the TV show. You aim to collect each character seen in the series, and use various card types, such as the crow card, to steal or defend your hand of cards. "House of Horrors" is set in a haunted mansion, filled with terrifying rooms and monsters represented by cards. Your aim is to stay as long in the titular house as you can, while your opponents play cards that describe events such as vampire attacks in a bid to chase you off.
