Celtic Soldier Games

The Celtic people, or Celts, were a tribe-dwelling race who lived predominantly in the area now known as Great Britain, but also in parts of mainland Europe, during both the Iron Age and the Roman Empire. Since Celtic legends and history, such as the rebellion of Queen Boudicca against the Romans in Britain, survive in the 21st Century, game designers have used Celtic warriors as a source of inspiration.
  1. "Celtic Warrior"

    • This board game has a deliberately ancient feel to it, and plays much like a combination of the traditional games of chess and checkers. Players have the opportunity to make a greater variety of moves than in chess, while the object of the game is similar to that of checkers, with players aiming to reduce their opponent to one game piece.

    "Pocket Battles: Celts vs. Romans"

    • This war game comes in a handy pocket-sized format, and recreates the ancient battles between the Celtic tribes and Roman invaders. Players use various tiles to represent regiments within their respective armies, with each troop type offering benefits to the army as a whole as well as either melee or ranged weapon attack options. Play takes place over a battlefield board, with participants aiming to destroy half of their rival's forces to win.

    "Celtic Kings: Rage of War"

    • This video game, available on the PC, is a real-time strategy game based on the conflicts between the Gauls and the Roman Empire. Though the game's history isn't entirely accurate, the title does allow players to command historical troop units such as Roman Praetorians, as well as characters such as druids, in battle. Players can compete online in the game's multiplayer mode or follow a storyline-based campaign in the title's adventure mode.

    "Hell Hath No Fury"

    • This war game is a simulation of the rebellion of the Iceni in 60 AD, famously led by Boudicca. The game is designed for two players and is played out over a map, with both sides trying to achieve victory by capturing strategic map locations, winning over allies or defeating enemy leaders.

    "Celtic Skirmish"

    • This board game is played out over a chessboard-style grid, and recreates a skirmish between opposing Celtic tribes. Counters represent different types of warrior, and players utilize a deck of cards to determine troop movement and combat. Each player's goal is to take out the leader of the rival tribe.

"Rome at War III: Queen of the Celts"

    • This war game centers on the battles between the Celts of Britain and the Roman armies. Each player takes on the mantle of the commander of one of the two armies, and must out-manoeuvre and out-fight the opponent. The two forces have different strengths, with the Celts utilizing chariots and the Romans employing a strong cavalry.

    "Celtic Warbands"

    • This card game recreates clashes between Celtic warrior tribes. On each turn, champions representing each player engage in battle, with players using poker-style game mechanics to determine the winner. Players aim to win five duels to become victorious overall.
