Ideas for Smelling Games

Most people have favorite aromas, such as fresh-cut grass, ground coffee or a rose in full bloom. When you breathe in, olfactory receptors in your nose send signals to your brain, which are translated into smells. According to Live Science, humans can recognize 10,000 different odors. Unpleasant odors can warn us of danger, such as the smell of something burning, or of rotten food. However, pleasant aromas help us to enjoy the taste of our food. Smelling games are fun for all age groups to play. Incorporate some into your party and find out who has the niftiest nose.
  1. Match the Smell

    • Prepare this game in advance by gathering five or six different shower gels, shampoos or body lotions together, each with a different scent, such as lavender, magnolia, coconut or apple. Pour a little of each into a plastic cup and number the cups. Have two cups contain the same smell. Adapt this game according to the age group of the players; limit the amount of smells for younger players. Blindfold the first player and have her smell each of the cups in turn, telling her the numbers of the cups as you do so. At the end, let her tell you the numbers of the cups she thinks match up. Let all the players take a turn before revealing how many were correct.

    Guess the Smell

    • Give each player a piece of paper and a pencil. Have him close his eyes, or blindfold him, then let him sniff from 10 or more jars or paper bags that you have prepared before the party. Place a variety of items with strong aromas inside the jars or bags such as cut grass, ground coffee, orange peels, chocolate, onions, ground cinnamon or strong cheese. Have the player write down his answers and see which player identifies most of the smells correctly.

    What's for Dinner?

    • Play this party game just before it is time to eat. Prepare 10 different types of party food with strong aromas such as pizza, popcorn, hot dogs, cubes of cheese, cinnamon buns and chocolate cookies. Blindfold each guest in turn and have her smell each plate of food and try to guess what it is. Write down her answers and see how many she gets right. When she has finished, let her take a seat at the table and wait while the others take a turn.

    Smell the Broom

    • Trick your guests with this demonstration of amazing smelling ability. Two people need to be primed to perform this trick: the smeller and the broom holder. The broom holder holds a wooden broom in two hands, parrallel to the floor. The smeller claims to be able to smell the spot where someone touches it. He leaves the room, and the broom holder asks for a volunteer to touch the broom. When the smeller returns he sniffs along the broom handle until he reaches the spot where the broom was touched. He will amaze the other guests by his accuracy. What they will not realize is that as he sniffs he is watching the broom holder's feet. When he reaches the correct spot the broom holder should subtly wiggle a toe inside his shoe, which if he is careful enough, the audience should not detect.
