Ideas for Kindergarten Camp

The goal of kindergarten camp is to encourage creativity, social interaction, gross and fine motor skill development and just plain fun. Plan a wide variety of indoor and activities that change daily, as the attention span of kindergarteners is generally limited. Children should go home after each session with excitement and enthusiasm about returning the next day.
  1. Indoor Projects

    • Many kindergarteners enjoy arts and craft projects. Set up art materials on a table so several kids can interact and share. Kids often enjoy drawing with colorful crayons on different types of paper. Finger paints are an expressive way for youngsters to create their own works of art to take home to their families. Recycled plastic bottles, egg crates and ribbons encourage young children to create their own masterpieces. Start a large collage with non-toxic markers, glue, paint, chenille stems, fabric bits, buttons, beads and small stones to allow each child to add something to a group project.

    Indoor Games

    • Kids love to play games, especially when going outdoors isn't feasible due to inclement weather. Bring out some age-appropriate board games for kids to play. Children often enjoy playing ball games indoors; provide foam balls and oversee a game of throwing the balls in pails or playing catch. Musical chairs is another game for kindergarteners and will keep them moving. Put on different types of music and encourage the little ones to make up their own dance steps.

    Rest and Snacks

    • Plan a rest period of at least 15 minutes for quiet time, when kids can sit quietly and read or lie down. Follow the rest period with snack time, which allows the kids an opportunity to share views on healthy choices. Fresh fruit, animal crackers, peanut butter on apple slices and cut-up veggies with dip are a few healthy choices.

    Outdoor Exploration

    • After receiving permission slips from parents, head out for some outdoor field trips. If there is a zoo or botanical garden near the camp, guide the kids as they enjoy naming new plants and viewing new animals. Always have a close ratio of adult to children to keep eyes on these active little ones. The day will provide the children with an opportunity to exercise, learn new things and enjoy fresh air. A local park with safe equipment is another place to take the campers.

    Outdoor Games

    • Simple organized games for the outdoors are another way for kids to get a dose of fresh air and physical activity. Have a sack race for the children with large burlap bags that they can jump into and hold up around themselves. Set up teams and a simple course to the finish line. Organize short relay races with kids divided in teams to promote cooperative play. Simon Says and other similar games allow children to practice listening and responding to instructions.
