Games for Caregivers

Whether you care for a child, a disabled or an elderly person, you are classified as a caregiver. This is a job that is of utmost importance, as you are ensuring the well-being of another human being. When tending to the needs of another person, you may find that you are in need of interactive and engaging activities to keep the person you are caring for, and yourself, entertained. Games are an ideal way to provide such entertainment.
  1. Card Games

    • There are several card games that can be played with the person you are caring for; just be sure to pick one that is age appropriate and one that suits the interests of the person you are playing with. For children, card games, such as Old Maid, War, Memory and Go Fish are age appropriate and will likely provide entertainment. For adults, the aforementioned games can certainly be played, as well as more involved games, such as Rummy, Black Jack and Baccarat.

    Board Games

    • Board games are another group of games that you can play with the person you are caring for. Common board games for children include Scrabble Junior, Hi-Ho Cherry-O, Chutes and Ladders, checkers and Candyland. These games not only provide entertainment for children, but they also provide skills building, as they promote vocabulary development, reading and even writing skills. If you care for an adult, you may consider board games that are a bit more challenging. Games to consider include Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, chess or Wits and Wagers.

    Guessing Games

    • The majority of guessing games are suitable for players of all ages. In these types of games, clues are given by one player and the other player has to try to guess what the item, person or image is that the clues are referring to in an allotted period of time. I Spy is a game that can be played with no additional pieces; simply choose an object in a room, describe it and the other person has to try to guess the item you are describing. Pictionary is a guessing game that involves drawing pictures that illustrate a given word or phrase. Another guessing game that you could play is charades, in which people, places and things are acted out and players make guesses based on the actions.

    Paper and Pencil Games

    • Play paper games with the person you are caring for. The classic game of tic-tac-toe is played by simply drawing a grid on a sheet of paper and filling it in with Xs and Os. Word scramble games can by played on paper. All that is required for this game is writing a word in a scrambled order and trying to rearrange the letters to determine the word. Dots is another game that can be played on paper. For this game, a grid of dots is drawn on a piece of paper and players try to connect the dots to form a square. As with guessing games, paper and pencil games are suitable for all ages.
