Active Bible Game Ideas

When planning a Sunday school class or church gathering, include a few active Bible games that will help impart the truth of God's word in creative and meaningful ways. Bible games will build social skills among peers, while teaching everyone about the Bible. You can adjust the games' difficulty depending on the ages of the players.
  1. Easy Games

    • For an easy game, play a game of four corners. Write the name of four Bible characters on sheets of paper. Place one paper in each corner and write the same names on small slips of paper to place in a bowl. Play music and have everyone walk around the room. When the music stops, everyone must stand in a corner. Draw a name from the bowl and everyone standing in that corner is out of the game. Keep eliminating players in each round and the last person left in the game is the winner. For a variation, use books of the Bible for the corner names.

    Balloon Games

    • Write funny instructions on several slips of paper, such as "Sing the song 'Jesus Loves Me,'" "Quote a Bible verse while standing on one leg with one arm in the air" or "Sing a verse from your favorite church song." Put each slip of paper in a balloon and place the balloons in the middle of the room. Have everyone grab one balloon. One at a time, players must pop the balloons and complete the instructions. Each player earns one point for a job completed. Keep playing until all the balloons are gone. The player with the most points wins the game.

    Bible Verse Games

    • Help players memorize Bible verses with an active hunt game. Write down half of a memory verse on one index card and the other half of the verse on another card. Do this with several verses and hide them all around the room. The first player to find a matching Bible verse wins the game. Make the game more difficult by only putting a few words on each card. Players will have to find all the cards that go with one memory verse.

    Fruit of the Spirit

    • Go over Galatians 5:22-23, which reads "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." Have the players sit in chairs in a circle, except for one player, who starts the game standing in the middle. All players must silently think of a fruit of the Spirit, such as joy, peace or patience. The player in the middle calls out a fruit of the Spirit and each player who was thinking of that fruit of the Spirit must stand up and find another seat. The player in the middle will also try to find a seat to sit in. Each round the player without a seat must go to the middle and call out a new fruit of the Spirit. The player in the middle also has the option to say, "Fruit basket upset." This means that everyone must get up and find another seat. Add some variety to the game by making players hop, skip or walk backwards when switching seats.
