Activities for Preteens in Church

When planning a social event or gathering for preteens at church, you can create activities to help the kids get to know one another, break the ice and have fun. Preteens are children between the ages of 9 and 12. Encourage the kids to stay involved in the activities by awarding small prizes like pocket Bibles and biblical bookmarks to game winners.
  1. Ice Breakers

    • Start the class with an easy ice breaker. Ask all the preteens to sit in a circle and select one person to go first. That person has to say her name and three reasons why she is blessed. Have each player go around the circle and do the same thing. For an ice breaker game, after everyone states her name, select one player. Point at another player and the player you selected must tell you the name of that player. If she answers correctly, she earns a small prize. This ice breaker will help the preteens learn each other's names.

    Bingo Games

    • Create a Fruit of the Spirit Bible bingo game by filling the squares with pictures and words about the Bible verse Galatians 5:22-23. Some picture examples include different fruits like watermelon, lemon and cherries. For words, use faithfulness, joy, love and gentleness, as well as other words from the verse. Write the same words and print the same pictures on small slips of paper. Place the slips of paper in a bowl. Give each player a bingo card and bingo markers. Call out the pictures and the words from the bowl. The first player to get a bingo and yell "Fruit of the Spirit" wins the game. For another bingo game, print Bible-related pictures on the squares, such as a cross, a Bible and a church. When a player has a bingo she can yell "I love church."

    Bible Verse Games

    • See how well the preteens know Bible verses by having a quiz. Give each player a sheet of paper. Read a Bible verse and leave out a word or two. The players must write down the missing words. The player who answers the most correctly wins the game. For another game, divide the preteens into teams. Give the questions about Bible verses and have them work together to figure out the answer. Each team earns one point for a correct answer. The first team to score five points wins the game.

    Books of the Bible Activities

    • For an individual game, give each player a blank sheet of paper and a pencil. When you say "Go," tell them to write down the books of the Bible in the correct order. Players receive one point for having a correct book name and two points for each name they have in the correct order. The player with the most points wins the game. For a team game, divide the players into teams. Ask them to work together to identify the books of the Bible and in the correct order. The team with the most correct answers wins the game.
