How to Flick a Penny

Flicking pennies at a classmate or co-worker is a time-honored tradition that often starts a penny-flicking war or rubber band flinging contest. Because your target will often be on the move once the pennies start flying, learning to flick a penny correctly and with accuracy requires practice. You also need to flick the penny in the right direction while keeping an eye out for your teacher or boss.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a penny to flick. Do not use a wheat penny or really old penny because some old coins are quite valuable and you may not be able to find the penny again after you have flicked it.

    • 2

Hold your middle finger and your thumb together as if you were about to snap them. Go ahead and snap your fingers to make sure you have the alignment of the fingers right for the flick.

    • 3

Pick the penny up with your opposite hand. Place the edge of the penny just slightly between the thumb and the middle finger that you will flick the penny with.

    • 4

Hold your snapping hand near your ear with the penny facing forward. Aim your elbow in the direction you want the penny to go.

    • 5

Give your fingers a snap. Try not to move your wrist. The harder the snap, the more velocity the penny has, and the further it will go.
