Board Games
These games are typically for multiple players. "Taxi" puts participants in the role of a driver working for a local company who must get a bunch of customers to set destinations and rake in the cash. Players must watch out for traffic jams, vehicle breakdowns and car thieves. In "Tuk Tuk Taxi," players aim to deliver their customers to the right destinations, and can obstruct their rivals by putting obstacles, such as traffic signs, in their path. The game's board can be flipped over to provide a different city for players to race around.
Nintendo Console Games
Taxi games have appeared across various Nintendo gaming consoles. "London Taxi: Rush Hour" is a one-player Wii game set on the streets of the English capital. Players choose from one of four types of taxicab and then dash among London's landmarks, picking up more money the faster they reach fares. In the Game Boy Advance title "Crazy Taxi: Catch a Ride," players try to earn as much money as possible on one taxi shift. Players must speed across hazard-strewn city streets, avoiding traffic, performing maneuvers and taking shortcuts to stay ahead of the clock. The title features five difficulty levels to challenge players.
PlayStation Games
Taxi games are available for multiple Sony PlayStation consoles. "Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars" contains the first two "Crazy Taxi" titles from Sega in one game for the PSP console; both titles find players careering across town to grab fares and performing stunt moves to gain more cash from impressed customers. Players can choose either arcade mode, in which they get more time after picking up passengers, or else try to earn as much cash as they can within set time limits. The third-person driver "Taxi Rider," for the PlayStation 2, aims to simulate the life of a taxi driver. The player must deal with demanding bosses, sick fares and a reputation that can change based on their game performance; players who make too many mistakes may find themselves without fares.
Other Video Games
Stunt-heavy "Crazy Taxi" is available on the PC, among other formats, and was perhaps the first taxi-based title to gain acclaim from gamers. This colorful game, in which drivers race through cities at top speeds to pick up fares, features two game modes, arcade and original city, as well as mini-games that involve bursting balloons or driving off huge ledges, for example. "Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller" is an Xbox title that continues the "Crazy Taxi" series, featuring high-speed action, thrilling stunts and arcade-style game play. Levels include Small Apple, West Coast and Glitter Oasis, which loosely resembles Las Vegas. The game adds special effects such as smoke from car exhausts.
