Merlin Game Instructions

Before the advent of Game Boy and the Nintendo DS, portable, handheld video games were a lot simpler. One of the early pioneers of small, electronic games was Merlin, which was released by Parker Brothers in 1978. Merlin was a portable game that allowed you to select from several games including Tic Tac Toe and Echo, which was similar, in concept, to Simon. Merlin also featured a Music Machine mode, which allowed you to use the game as a musical instrument with 11 notes.

Instructions

  1. Tic Tac Toe

    • 1

Pry open the battery compartment door and add 6 AA batteries. Place the battery door cover back on. Locate the power switch on Merlin's right-hand side and slide it to the "On" position.

    • 2

Press the "New Game" button. It is located beneath the 11-button key pad on the top left-hand side.

    • 3

Press the No. 1 button on the key pad to start the Tic Tac Toe game.

    • 4

Press any button on the key pad from one to nine to select your position, and then press the "Computer Turn" button. When you do this, Merlin will then take his turn. Continue in this manner until you or Merlin gets three in a row.

    Music Machine

    • 5

Press the "New Game" button, and then press the No. 2 button to start the Music Machine mode.

    • 6

Press buttons two through nine to create notes. These buttons represent the musical scale. The Number 1 button is the "low sol" note, and the Number 10 button is the "high sol" note.

    • 7

Press the "Computer Turn" button for Merlin to play your song back to you.

    Echo

    • 8

Press the "New Game" button and then the No. 3 button to initiate the Echo game.

    • 9

Select a number from one to nine after Merlin blinks twice. Merlin will then play a sequence of notes that will correspond to the number you selected. For example, if you select the number six, Merlin will play a six-note pattern.

    • 10

Repeat the pattern Merlin played. Merlin will give you a nasty buzz if you select the wrong key, but will then allow you to follow up with the correct pattern.
