Innovative Water Games

When the weather becomes warmer, you'll need to think of some creative games to keep your children cool and entertained. Often, all you need is a bucket of water or a garden hose for some water play in the backyard. Invite a group of children over and use your imagination to build some new games at a water party on a hot summer day.
  1. Chill Out Rainy Relay

    • Divide children into two equal teams, giving each team a large bucket filled with water, an empty bucket, and a plastic cup with three holes punched into the sides. Set the empty buckets at one end of the yard at the finish line and the filled buckets by the children. Yell "Go!" The first teammate dips his cup into water bucket and holds it above his head as he runs across the yard. As each child reaches the second bucket, he dumps what's left in the cup into it and runs back and tags the next teammate. Play continues until the water bucket is empty, and the team with the most water in the second bucket wins the game.

    Water Limbo

    • Instead of traditional limbo using a limbo stick, either use your finger to create a horizontal stream at the end of the hose or use a sprayer. Each child takes a turn under the limbo hose as you keep lowering the water. The winner is the child who can limbo with the water stream the lowest to the ground though all the children will relish getting soaked by the hose on a scorching summer day.

    Splash and Score

    • Let children test their throwing aim and soak their opponent with water balloons in this game. Divide the children into two equal teams, with one group being the throwers and one being the receivers. Hand each set of two players a bucket of water filled to the brim, a plastic bat, and 12 water balloons. Each child on the thrower team tosses a water balloon and attempts to land it in the bucket, while the receiver kneels behind the bucket with the bat to block the water balloons. Each thrower tosses two water balloons and after the score is tallied, the receivers become the throwers, and the game continues for three rounds.

    Tug of War

    • Divide the group of children into teams by equal size and strength and have each team grab a hold of a long jump rope. Situate the middle of the rope through a running sprinkler and watch the laughter and fun and the children get soaked as they pull each other back and forth into a steady stream of water.

    Butterfinger Ball

    • Fill an inflatable kiddie pool with water. Lather each young child's hand's with sunscreen and wet a beach ball with water. Toddlers and preschoolers get in the pool and throw the ball back and forth to each other and laugh as it continually slips out of their hands into the water.
