Verbal Games for Children

Games that increase verbal skill are good for building vocabulary and confidence in children. Verbal games don't cost money, require no supplies and can be played while waiting in line or stuck in the car. Many verbal games build skills such as memory and imagination as well. Encourage kids to join in the fun by letting them choose the game.
  1. I Spy

    • I Spy is a quick game that can be played with as few as two players. One person thinks of an item and says "I spy something," filling in a short description of the item. For example, a player could say, "I spy something blue and fuzzy". The other players must guess the item. Whoever guesses correctly gets the next turn at spying an item.

    Twenty Questions

    • Twenty Questions is another game that can be played with as few as two players. One player thinks of a person, place or thing, and the other players must figure out what that person is thinking of. They must ask questions that can be answered with a yes or a no. The players can ask a maximum of 20 questions and then must guess. This game can be adapted using categories such as cartoons, movies or songs.

    The Alphabet Game

    • The Alphabet Game is a fun memory game that can be played just about anywhere. The object of the game is to remember what items each person said he is going to bring on the picnic. Start off the game by saying, "I'm going on a picnic and bringing ..." The first person names something that starts with "a," such as apple muffins. Then the next person says, "I'm going on a picnic, and I'm bringing apple muffins and ..." He must choose a "b" word, such as bread. Continue on, until all letters of the alphabet have been used.

    The Echo Game

    • The echo game is fun for all ages and can be adapted to be easy, hard, silly or serious. Older kids may enjoy practicing spelling words together using this game. One person creates the echo by chanting the words, "Let's play the echo, echo game. Let's play the echo, echo game. Let's play the echo, echo game. Whatever I do, you do the same." Then she must choose words she wishes the other players to echo. The leader can choose silly words that rhyme or something she wishes others to memorize, like the names of the presidents. Have children take turns being the leader and creating the echo.
