Forensic Science Computer Games

When a crime is reported or discovered, the crime scene must be examined carefully and methodically to make sure all relevant evidence is recovered. Forensic science involves the application of the scientific method and scientific tools to criminal investigations. It includes recording and identifying fingerprints, collecting and analyzing DNA samples, detecting microscopic fibers and testing substances for drug content. While the details of forensic science are often inaccessible to the public, many games are available that teach players the basics of the science.
  1. "Whodunit?"

    • PBS has produced a game of forensic science entitled "Whodunit?" This game teaches players about the unique pattern contained in each human fingerprint. With the exception of identical twins, every fingerprint is unique. "Whodunit?" presents players with a crime scene and asks them to find fingerprints by scanning the scene with a magnifying glass. They must then lift the prints with tape and collect them to be sent to the lab. Players must eventually identify the perpetrator based on the fingerprint information discovered at the scene.

    "Places of Interest"

    • Virtual Museum of Canada has produced a game that is presented in a story format. The player arrives on the scene as a detective and is informed about the details of the crime scene. The player must then decide whether to investigate places of interests, inspect clues and talk to police officers and witnesses to crack the case. Common spots of interest include the place of entry, the location of a struggle and the site of the victim's death. Players receive a score at the end of the game.

    "CSI: Web Adventures"

    • What would a list of forensic science games be without a CSI game? Based on the "CSI" television franchise, "CSI: Web Adventures" allows players to put their forensic investigative skills to the test. There are three levels of difficulty -- Rookie Training, Canine Caper and Burning Star. Categories of investigation include forensic biology, toxicology, firearms and toolmarks, medical examinations and CSI ethics. This game was developed by the National Science Foundation.

    "Arctica"

    • "Arctica" is an online interactive store/game that allows users to explore some of the issues surrounding forensic investigations in very cold and snowy climates. The player is asked to read through the story, meeting new characters. At certain points, the player is to interpret clues from letters, uncover bodies and evidence and examine clues. Players are given several opportunities to solve the case. If they would prefer, they many continue uncovering clues until they are ready to solve the crime.
