Birthday Game Ideas For Teens & Preteens

When planning a birthday party for a group of preteens and teens, be sure to include a variety of age-appropriate games to keep them entertained. Although some preteens and teens think games are too childish, you can still create a few games most of them will enjoy. Encourage them to play along by awarding prizes, such as gift cards, to all game winners.
  1. Games with Candy

    • Give each player a giant straw filled with super sour powdered candy. When you say "Go," each player must pour the entire stick of candy in his mouth and close his mouth. Players have to keep their mouths shut and the candy in their mouths. The last player standing with his mouth completely shut wins the game and a prize. For another candy game, try a candy scavenger hunt. Hide candy all over the party area. Give each player a bag. Tell everyone to hunt for the candy. The player who finds the most candy wins the game and a prize.

    Fashion Games

    • Divide the party-goers into teams of three or four players each. Give each team a roll of duct tape and a newspaper. Tell the teams they have 30 minutes to create an outfit for one of their teammates using only the duct tape and newspaper. Have two or three adults judge each team's outfit after 30 minutes. Award prizes to the teams with the most creative and funniest outfits. For a variation, give each team foil and plastic wrap to create the outfits.

    Games with Eggs

    • See who is willing to risk the chance to get messy for a prize with a game of egg smash. Hard-boil several eggs and place them in a bowl to cool. Place a raw egg in the bowl with the hard-boiled eggs. Give each player an egg and count to three. On three, each player must smash her egg against her forehead. The player who has the raw egg wins a prize. For another egg game, have all the players select a partner and give each pair a raw egg. The players stand five feet from their partners. When you say "Toss," the players toss the eggs to their partners. If they drop the egg or it breaks, they are out of the game. The players take a step back after each toss. The team who successfully tosses the egg the farthest distance wins the game.

    Balloon Games

    • Fill several balloons with shaving cream, and also place a small rubber ball inside three of the balloons. Place the balloons on a plastic tarp. When you say "Go," the players must race to the balloons and begin popping them by sitting, standing or pinching them with their fingernails. The three players who find the rubber balls each win a prize. For another balloon game, divide the players into two teams. Blow up 30 balloons in two different colors (one color for each team). Assign a color for each team. When you say "Race," the players must pop all of their team's colored balloon as fast as possible. The team who pops all their balloons first wins the game.
