Verb Definition Game
Pass out small slips of paper to everyone after each turn. One at a time, each person opens the dictionary to find a verb that is uncommon. Read the verb aloud. Have each family member write from their own imagination what that verb means. The person holding the dictionary writes the correct meaning of the verb. Collect the papers and give them to the person holding the dictionary. This person reads all the definitions aloud and the others each guess which one is the correct definition. Each time someone guesses correctly, they get a point. Whoever has the most points after a set time, or whoever reaches the set winning number of points first is the winner. This game can get hysterical.
Verb "Charades"
Write down familiar actionable verbs. Put them in a bowl and have players pick one piece of paper at a time. Play the game of "Charades" by having each person act out the action verb they chose for the others as individuals or separated into teams.
Play a Blank Verb Game
Play a game with blanks for actionable verbs in sentences. Type sentences on individual index cards or separate small sheets of paper. Make several cards for each player so everyone has several turns. For example, one card could say, "My dog ___________ (ran/barked) in the parking lot." Another card could say, "My Mom ___________ (dug/planted) in the garden." A third card may say, "My Dad __________ (read/walked) at the park." A fourth card might have, "My little brother __________ (hopped/played) at the zoo, and so forth." Have everyone fill in the blanks on their own cards with actionable verbs they want to act out. When it is their turn, have players read one sentence aloud saying the word, "blank," in the space of the sentence. Guessers can then try to figure out what actionable verb the performer is acting out to complete the sentence (like playing "Charades"). When the action is guessed correctly, the player reads the sentence aloud again, this time including the actionable verb in the space so it makes a complete sentence. Whoever guesses the most acted out verbs the fastest, wins.
Playing a Verb Game in Spanish
Learn Spanish action verbs by playing a game with a bouncy ball. Have everyone seated in chairs in a circle. To learn Spanish actionable verbs and their meanings, purchase a pack of Spanish verb flash cards. Read aloud the action verbs and show the group the pictures and the words from the flash cards. When finished, challenge their memories: whoever has the ball bounces it to another player while saying an actionable Spanish verb aloud. The person catching the ball has five seconds to say the meaning (as in playing "Hot Potato") or loses a point. He then bounces the ball to someone else while saying a Spanish action verb aloud. He can repeat the action verb that was given to him in the first place on to the next person.
