Smoking Prevention Games

Smoking is a highly addictive, extremely dangerous and anti-social habit. It is the leading cause of preventable deaths in America, according to Kid's Health, and 90 percent of adult smokers started when they were children. Properly educating students on the risks and associated diseases of smoking can help them to make sensible, informed decisions and say "no" to smoking. Games are an interesting way for children to learn about smoking dangers, both at school and at home.

Smoking Prevention Bingo
- Smoking Prevention Bingo helps facilitate discussion between students.
  
  The Smoking Prevention Bingo game is a fun way to really get youngsters involved in learning about the dangers of smoking. The game addresses five topics; why children smoke, the effects of smoking, facts about tobacco, ways to say "no" to smoking and smoking prevention activities, using the bongo format. There are five sets of calling cards included with the game, providing facts and ideas to help facilitate discussion and encourage students to evaluate their behavior and attitudes towards smoking. The complete game, including instructions, is available to purchase from the eNasco online school supply catalog, for $39.95, as of the date of publication.
Crosswords

  No Butts! is a smoking awareness site that covers topics such as tobacco facts, cigarette ingredients, cancer and other associated diseases and dealing with peer pressure. It also includes a cancer crossword puzzle for students to complete after reading the facts. If you do not have easy Internet access for students, then you can make your own crossword puzzles on all the different aspects of smoking. Hand students research material and fact sheets, or instruct them to research these areas for homework before completing the crosswords.
Rex Ronan
- Viewing graphic images of a smoker's organs can help put youngsters off smoking.
  
  Rex Ronan is a video game created by Click Health, available on the Super Nintendo and Windows platforms. The character, Rex Ronan, is a surgeon who shrinks until he can enter the body of his patients. Once inside, students can move the tiny surgeon through nine areas of the body, where he uses a laser scalpel to remove tar, phlegm, precancerous cells and other nasty things caused by smoking. Students can ask Rex questions about the effects of tobacco on the body, as well as viewing graphic images, such as clogged arteries and tar deposits in the lungs.
Shane and Sally
- Interactive, animated games can be very enjoyable for students of all ages.
  
  The Shane and Sally Smoke Free Game is suitable for children aged 10 to 12, encouraging them to obtain answers to questions regarding the effects of smoking and the tobacco industry. Available in two formats, the Smoke Free Game is a printable paper version while Clear the Air is an online version, suitable for one to two players. At Smoke Free Kids, teachers can download and print the game, questions and samples of the completed game. Alternatively, students can team up into pairs and work their way through the animated, interactive online game.
