Winterfest Game Ideas

Many schools, organizations and communities host winter festivals each year. When planning a winterfest, include a variety of winter-themed games for people of all ages. Awarding game winners with winter-themed plush toys and prizes will encourage game participation. A few game ideas, some creativity and some inexpensive supplies are all you need to plan winterfest games.
  1. Snowball Relay Race

    • Create a snowball relay race by marking a starting line and a run-to line 20 feet apart. Divide the players into two teams and have them line up at the starting line. Give the first player in each team line a white polystyrene foam ball (snowball). When you say "Race," the first player in each team line must place the snowball on the ground and push it with his nose to the run-to line. After he crosses the line, he must race back to the next player in line and hand the snowball to him. Each player must do the same thing. The first team to finish the race wins the game.

    Winter Prize Walk

    • Draw or print pictures of winter-themed items, such as a snowman, snowflake, snowballs and hot chocolate. Place the pictures on the ground in a circle. Print the same pictures on small slips of paper and place them in a bowl. Have the players walk around the circle, while Christmas music plays. When the music stops, everyone must stand on a winter picture. Draw a picture from the bowl and the player standing on that picture wins a prize.

    Snowball Toss

    • Spray white polystyrene foam balls with white glitter spray and allow time to dry overnight. Place several buckets about 10 feet from a standing line. Have players try to toss the "snowballs" into the buckets. Award a small prize to each player who makes a snowball in a bucket. If you want to award large prizes, place buckets 20 feet from the line and have players try to make them.

    Snow Spoon Race

    • For another relay race, divide the players into two teams. Mark a starting line and a run-to line 20 feet apart. Give each player a plastic spoon. Give the first player in each line a large marshmallow "piece of snow." When you say "Race," the first player in each team line must place the spoon in his mouth and the marshmallow on the spoon. He must race to the run-to line and back with the "snow" on his spoon. If he drops it, he must start over at the starting line. When he makes it back, he will pass the "snow" to the next player in line who must do the same thing. The first team to finish the relay race wins the game.
