Healthy Heart Games

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease kills more people in the U.S. than any other condition. Learning to stay healthy is important for children as well as for adults. One-third of American kids are overweight or obese, and signs of heart problems may appear in childhood. Educational materials teaching healthy-heart habits can be reinforced by children's games.
  1. Heart Rate

    • The Keeping Healthy game at the Science Kids website shows how exercise, such as walking and running, changes their heart beats. Clicking on different activities will make the heart beat faster or slower depending upon level of effort required.

    Healthy Food

    • Kids can discover how to make "better-for-you" choices by taking the Healthy Fridge Quiz, where they learn to fill up the fridge with healthy food. The quiz tests how "heart smart" you are. The same website, Just for Kids, also has a Seek-A-Word Game filled with healthy food choices. Rescramble the words and you can play this game several times.

    Monsters and Heart Operations

    • The Monster Game is an educational and fun game: You select your own pet monster and feed it, as well as pick different types of exercises. You can check your monster's resulting mood and heart rate. The British Heart Foundation also has another online game in which you carry out various heart operations, such as bypass and transplant.

    Healthy Eating

    • The game I Spy can be changed so that, instead of looking at things, you eat the food that you have spied. Play this game at dinnertime or at a party. For example, make a plate of vegetables and fruits for each person. Then, you can say something like, "I spy something white and it looks like a cloud." The first person to pick cauliflower and eat it picks the next food and describes it to the others.
