Pirate Trading Games

Plenty of pirate games exist out there, but if you want to play a title that gets close to emulating how piracy on the high seas would really have felt, you'll need to purchase a pirate game with elements of trading. These games typically involve exploring the oceans and attacking towns and other ships to acquire booty. The trading aspect of the game comes into play when you swap resources with vessels and settlements to develop your pirate empire.
  1. Sea Dogs

    • P.C. title "Sea Dogs" is a combination of a strategy game and a role-playing adventure. You play Nicholas, who escapes prison and takes on the life of a privateer on the seven seas. When you're not attacking ships or venturing to new islands in the game's archipelago setting, you visit towns, where you can trade goods you've discovered elsewhere and purchase equipment or supplies.

    Dread Pirate

    • This is a board game set on the high seas, and is designed for up to four players. Participants each take on the role of a pirate captain, and you must outwit your opponents as you travel the board in a bid to accumulate the most treasure. You proceed by handling random events contained on game cards, which also contain pirate-themed trivia, and by trading gems with your rivals to gather gold.

    Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales

    • After "Sea of Dogs," development house Akella designed this pirate-themed RPG. Players sail the oceans as a ship captain, and must first recruit a crew, each member of which has their own advantages while on your roster. During the game, you'll visit numerous islands, where you can trade your ill-gotten gains, plunder the locals' gold, or face off against regiments of guards during raids. By accumulating gold and savvy trading, you'll eventually buy improvements for your vessel and create your own island retreat.

    Port Royale

    • Set in the Caribbean in the 16th and 17th centuries, this P.C. title allows you to carve out a career as a pirate, privateer or even an honest trader. The game comprises various missions that follow a storyline, and you'll not only have to master a complex trading system, but also engage with computer-controlled enemies in real-time combat and explore areas using treasure maps. Players must watch goods prices to make savvy trades, and can even own a small business to garner gold.

    Pirates of the Caribbean: Buccaneer

    • In this board game, you'll be on the hunt for treasure points, which you accumulate by traveling around a board filled with locations found in the popular "Pirates of the Caribbean" series of movies, such as Tortuga Island. Each player draws cards to determine movement and to uncover special quests, and you'll need to survive various hazards such as cursed pirates, as well as make successful trades, to return back to port with your treasure.

    Sid Meier's Pirates

    • Created by the games designer behind the successful "Civilisation" series, this seafaring title combines strategy with action. The game takes you on a journey from humble beginnings to sailing the high seas as a successful captain. When you begin, you'll choose a specialty such as swashbuckling, and then must roam the oceans, trading with or defeating rivals to get ahead.
