Walkie Talkie Games

Walkie-talkies are a common childhood toy, and for this reason many adults have fond memories of using them with their friends. While these devices have plenty of practical purposes, they also allow people to play several games that take advantage of the technology. These games typically involve team-based strategy and the goal of out outmanoeuvring your opponents.
  1. Surveillance

    • Surveillance-based games involve one player selected as the "target" that other players are required to "track." The target then walks to a predetermined location for the game to start, typically after an allotted time for the trackers to get into position. The game involves the trackers, communicating via walkie-talkies, keeping the target under surveillance and accurately reporting his movements to one another. However, the trackers must remain out of the target's sight at all times. The game is won by the trackers if they keep the target under surveillance for 20 minutes and is lost if they lose track of the target or the target notices a hiding tracker and announces them by name.

    Capture the Flag

    • Capture the flag is a classic game that can be improved through the implementation of walkie-talkies. The game involves two teams attempting to "capture" the other team's flag (hidden on opposite sides of the playing area) and bring it back to their "base." However, if a player is "tagged" while on the opposing team's side, that player is put in "jail" for a period of time until they're eligible to play again. Using walk-talkies, both teams are able to coordinate strategies and give instructions from far away, making the teamwork more intricate and sophisticated. This typically works best if one player on each side is designated the "commander" of that team.

    Sound Hunt

    • A sound hunt is a game similar to hide-and-seek, except it allows the "seekers" to hear where the hiding player is located. For this to work, the hiding player has to be in a reasonably loud location (such as a market or street corner), with their walkie-talkie always switched on, thus broadcasting the sound from where they are. The other players use their walkie-talkies to listen to the sound and attempt to discover its source, revealing the hiding player in the process.

    Zombies

    • In this game, which works best with large groups and lots of playing space, all but one player has a walkie-talkie set to the same frequency. The player without the walkie-talkie is designated as the "zombie," required to "bite" (tag) the "humans" to transform them into zombies. The humans are allowed to use the walkie-talkies to coordinate their avoidance of the zombies, as the zombies are required to switch off their walkie-talkies after being transformed. The game finishes when only one human is left, being named the winner.
