Silent Games for Children

Having a variety of silent games on hand is a good idea for when you need the kids to settle down. Quiet children's games also come in handy for teachers when they need to calm the classroom quickly. Just because a game is quiet and relaxing doesn't mean it isn't as much fun as a traditional game.
  1. Unscramble the Words

    • Unscrambling simple words can have more than one possible answer.

Keeping with a particular theme, unscrambling words can be a lot of fun for kids. When choosing a certain theme or topic be sure to keep it within an area that the children are familiar with. A few possibilities are farm animals, baby items, wedding items, sports teams, snack foods, bands or states. Have an adult make a list of words that all relate to the same topic, then scramble all of the letters in each of the words. Set a timer and the person who gets the most words correct when the timer goes off wins the game.

    Memory Game

    • It's fun to play the memory game with a friend or family member.

Memory games are popular with just about every age group. Not only does this type of game quiet a child down, but it also requires use of critical thinking skills. Memory games can be individually created to be original and fit within a certain topic, or you can choose from a variety of free memory games on the Internet. When designing your own memory game, it's best to choose a topic that's age appropriate and keeps the child's attention. Create flash cards, except make two of each one and be sure to leave the backside blank. With at least 20 different items such as animals, scramble all the cards and lay them out blank side up. Let the child turn over one card at a time and try to remember where its mate is.

    Jacks

    • Child can play some games quietly alone or with friends.

The game of jacks is a silent game children can play. This particular game has been around for years, and a child can play it alone or with friends. The game involves a small bouncy ball and a handful of metal or plastic jacks. The idea of the game is to bounce the ball lightly in front of you while your sitting on the floor, and while the ball is in the air, grab a jack before the ball bounces again. The first time, you grab one jack, the second time you try to grab two jacks, and so on.

    Word Search

    • Children of every age can enjoy word puzzles.

Word search games are sure to keep children occupied. These particular games can be found in a variety of activity books for children. Many local department stores carry them in their magazine section, or they can be found in book stores or children's learning centers. Many of these activity books also contain word scrambles, and count-by-number puzzles. Any of these activities can be entertaining for the whole family.
