Active Games to Play Inside

Even when the weather is inclement outdoors, you can plan some excitement indoors by creating games. Having a few active games planned to play indoors will keep everyone busy and prevent boredom. Use indoor games at a birthday party, social gathering or for the entire family. With a few supplies, some game ideas and a creative imagination, you can create active indoor games everyone can enjoy.
  1. Dance Games

    • Have a dance contest to keep everyone active indoors. Allow everyone to select a song and go into separate rooms to practice their dance moves. If you have a large group, divide the players into teams. Give everyone 20 minutes to practice their dance moves. After 20 minutes, everyone can come out and show their performance. Everyone can decide together on the best dance moves. For another dance game, play music and have everyone dance around the room. When the music stops, the players must freeze. Any player caught moving is out of the game. The last player standing wins the game.

    Hunt Games

    • Hide several pennies around the play area. Make sure you count them and you know how many you hid, so you know how many players should find. Give each player a small plastic bag and have him hunt for pennies. The player who finds the most pennies wins the game. For another variation, hide gold coins, small party favor toys or candy for the players to hunt.

    Charade Games

    • Play a game of animal charades by writing down several animal names on slips of paper. Use animal names, such as a cow, chicken, snake, mouse, tiger, giraffe and a dog. Place the slips of paper in a bowl. Divide the players into two teams. Each team will send one player at a time to draw a name from the bowl. That team player has one minute to act out the animal and have her team guess the animal. If they guess correctly in one minute, they earn a point. The first team to score 10 points wins the game. Another idea is to use celebrity names or types of food.

    Cotton Ball Games

    • Tell a player to sit in a chair. Place a bowl of cotton balls in his lap and hold an empty bowl on his head. Blindfold the player and give him a spoon. When you say, "Go," he has one minute to use the spoon to transfer as many cotton balls as he can to the empty bowl on his head. He cannot touch the cotton balls with his hands at any time. Give each player one minute to do the same thing. The player who transfers the most cotton balls in one minute wins the game. For another cotton ball game, give everyone a spoon and a cotton ball. Mark a starting line and a run-to line 20 feet apart. When you say, "Race," everyone must place the cotton ball on their spoon. They must race to the run-to line and back to the starting line. If they drop their cotton ball, they must start over. The first player to make it back to the starting line with their cotton ball on their spoon wins the game.
