Fun Chalk Games

Games don't have to have a lot of pieces or cost a lot of money. A game can be created with a little originality and creativity with a limited number of supplies. A simple set of chalk can help you create a game that will keep your friends or children entertained for hours.
  1. Chalk Darts

    • Draw targets on the sidewalk using chalk. They can be various sizes and shapes. Write point values for each of the shapes, with the smallest shapes having the most point values. Each player is then given five pieces of chalk and must stand behind a line drawn at a distance away from the shapes agreed upon by all players. Each player takes turns tossing his five pieces of chalk. Any that land entirely inside a shape without touching the lines of the shape scores the point value for that shape. The player with the most points after five throws wins.

    Connecting Games

    • Draw a grid on the sidewalk using chalk. The grid should be a square, either five rows by five columns, or 10 rows by 10 columns. Two players play this game at a time, with one being X's and other other O's. Players alternate turns drawing their symbols on the grid. The first player to connect three of his symbols in a row vertically, horizontally or diagonally on the five-by-five grid is the winner. Five symbols must be connected on the 10-by-10 grid for a player to win.

    Baseball

    • Draw a baseball diamond on the sidewalk and give each player four pieces of chalk to represent his runners. Draw circles on the field and label them single, double, triple and home run. The single should be the largest circles and should be smaller, with the home run being the smallest circles. The number of circles drawn is up to the players to agree on. Each player then stands behind a line and throws a coin onto the baseball diamond. If it lands entirely in a shape, he uses his chalk as a runner and advances each runner he has on base the number corresponding to the circle. A single is one base, double two bases, triple three bases and home run is four bases. If the coin touches a line or does not land in a circle, it is an out. Players continue until they get three outs, and then another player takes a turn. Each piece of chalk that reaches home plate scores a run. Players can play as many rounds or innings as they choose with the highest scorer at the end of those innings being the winner.

    Treasure Hunt

    • Use chalk to create a treasure map on the sidewalk in your neighborhood. This is a game that is especially good for young kids who enjoy pirate-themed activities. Draw and arrow and a number. That number indicates how many feet the players must go in that direction to find the next arrow. The next arrow will then show another direction along with number of feet. The players follow the arrows like a map until they find an X written on the sidewalk. Reward them for following the directions by having a small prize such as candy or a small toy such as a ball for each of the players.
