Fun 2-Player Games

There's nothing quite like a good game between friends; they build relationships, open the door for communication, and offer a fun way to spend time. In many cases, the only restraint for a fun-filled night is finding the right two-player game to play. Fortunately, there are thousands of options to choose from.
  1. Chess

    • The rules of chess take some time to get used to.

While the rules of chess require some study (and practice), the game is one of rich strategy and many different possibilities. Players move various pieces to navigate a board of 64 squares. These pieces include eight pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, a queen and a king. Each piece carries its own rules for movement. A player wins when his opponent is unable to navigate her king into safety from opposing pieces (a scenario commonly described as "checkmate"). You can find these rules, in depth, at many different websites. (See Resource.)

    Checkers

    • Checkers is a simple game of strategy and has been around for a very long time.

Checkers is an old favorite among two-player games. With straightforward rules and an open field of possibilities, no two play experiences are quite the same. Using red (or black) and white pieces, players navigate a tile board with diagonal movement. As they do so, they aim to "jump" their opponent's pieces by moving over adjacent diagonal pieces which have open boxes immediately past them (this is referred to as a "capture," and it removes the jumped piece from the game). A player wins when her opponent has no pieces left or is unable to take an additional legal move.

    Gin Rummy

    • Gin rummy requires only a standard 52-card deck of playing cards.

Gin rummy is one of thousands of games which can be played with a standard deck of 52 playing cards. To play, both players is dealt 10 cards, from which they must attempt to create "sets" (a group of three or more cards which share a name or number) or "runs" (a group of cards in the same suit which appear in numeric order). In each subsequent turn, players draw, "play" sets and runs, add to sets and runs and discard cards. When one player has no cards remaining, the game ends and points are totaled. A combination of luck and skill offers an allure to both old and seasoned players. Likewise, the ability to play one or several rounds of gin rummy makes the game malleable enough for many different time frames, from killing time to a full night's entertainment.

    Battleship

    • Battleship is fun for children and adults, as both have a chance to win.

Battleship is an old favorite for many people, as it is simple enough for players of all ages. The goal of this game is to sink your opponent's ships (which are hidden) by guessing their coordinates. Under conventional rules, the destruction of one player's entire fleet (typically 5 ships of varying sizes) ends a game. Because this game involves both luck and strategy in guessing a ship's location, it offers enough depth to entertain players for multiple games.
