How to Throw a Football Through a Tire

If you attend a carnival or fair ground, then you will notice there are games of chance and skill. If you win one of these games, then you get a prize. However, some of these prizes are much harder than they appear. One such game involves throwing a football through a tire. Depending on the carnival or fair, you may need to throw the football at different distances, or throw several footballs through the tire in a row in order to win the prize.

Instructions

  1. Short Distance; 10 feet or Less

    • 1

Grip the football correctly. With your throwing hand, bend your fingers at the second knuckle. Grasp the football with your hand on the back half of the laces. Your index finger will most likely be just off the laces or on the back lace. Your middle finger, ring finger, and pinkie will spread evenly across the laces. Your thumb will rest under the football.

    • 2

Bend your throwing elbow so that it forms a right angle between your forearm and upper arm.

    • 3

Hold the football eye-level in front of your face. This is going to help you aim the football.

    • 4

Rotate your hand. Move your hand so that your palm is facing the sky. Note, that this is not the way you would throw a football over a greater distance. You are throwing it in this different manner because at a short distance you do not have the time to get a tight spiral.

    • 5

Aim the football. With the football in front of you at eye level, aim for the top side of the tire, above the center of the opening.

    • 6

Cock back your elbow. Your forearm and upper arm will be at about a 45 degree angle.

    • 7

Release the football. Move your forearm forward quickly and release the football when your forearm and upper arm at about a 90 degree angle. This will be a short snap type motion. Gravity will bring the ball down slightly and allow it to sail right through the center of the tire.

    Longer Throw

    • 8

Grasp the football. Place your throwing hand on the football in the same manner as Section 1, Step 1. Your fingers are evenly spread over the back half of the football across the laces, and your thumb is resting underneath,

    • 9

Turn so you are sideways to the target. Turn to the side so that your throwing hand is farthest from the target.

    • 10

Place your front foot so it is pointing to the target. One secret to throwing any ball is that the direction of where the front foot is pointed is where the ball will be thrown.

    • 11

Raise your arms to a "T" shape. Your arms are now parallel to the ground. Point your front hand toward the tire. You will notice that both your front foot and front hand are pointed directly at the target. This is how you are aiming the football.

    • 12

Throw the football. Rotate your back hip forward. Simultaneously, your throwing arm will move into a 90 degree angle between your forearm and upper arm. Release the football when it has just crossed in front of your shoulder. Your back foot will land facing the tie next to your front foot.
