Cowboy-Related Games to Play at Family Reunions

Put on your cowboy boots and plan some cowboy-related games for your next family reunion. When hosting a western or cowboy-themed reunion, adding some party games can make the reunion a big success. A few ideas, supplies and some creativity are all you need to get the cowboy party started. Encourage everyone to participate by awarding cowboy-themed prizes to all game winners.
  1. Boot and Hat Toss

    • Make some bandanna beanbags by filling bandannas with dried beans or rice and sewing the edges. Bandanna beanbags are available online and at some craft stores if you do not have time to make them. Place a cowboy hat upside down on the ground and a pair of boots beside the hat. Mark a standing line 6 feet away for children and 15 feet away for adults. Players must stand at the lines and try to toss the bandanna beanbags into the hat and boots. Award prizes to each player who makes a beanbag or to the players who make the most beanbags.

    Plastic Cowboy Shootout

    • Line several plastic toy cowboys on a long bar, fence or table (outdoors). Players must try to knock down the plastic cowboys using a water gun. Each player has until the water runs out of the gun to knock down as many as he can. The child and the adult who knock down the most cowboys win a prize.

    Cowboy Lasso Roping

    • Use a rope as a lasso and place a large plush horse or cow on the ground. Have players try to rope the plush animal. Mark a line 10 feet away for children and 15 feet away for adults. Award a prize to each player who can successfully rope the animal with three throws.

    Cowboy Items in a Haystack

    • Unwrap two large bales of hay and spread out each bale. Place plastic cowboys, pennies, small pieces of bandannas and gold nuggets in the haystacks. Make gold nuggets by spray-painting rocks with gold paint. Have two players compete at a time. When you say "Go," the players have one minute to find as many items as they can in the hay. The player who finds the most cowboy items wins a prize.

    Cowboy Relay Race

    • Divide the players into two teams. Have the players line up at a starting line. Mark a run-to line 25 feet away with two sets of cowboy outfits. Each outfit should have a cowboy vest, pair of chaps, cowboy hat, extra large boots and a fake gun holster. When you say, "Race," the first player in each team line must run to the line and put on the cowboy outfit. He must yell, "Yee-haw," and run back to his team. He has to hand off the cowboy outfit to the next player in line who must run to the other line, yell, "Yee-haw," and run back. Each player must do the same thing. The first team to finish the relay race wins the game.
