Group Games to Do on the Beach

A day trip to the local beach provides a great chance for swimming, sun bathing and enjoying the ocean. If you are planning a group trip or a beach party, bring along the materials needed to play a few group games. Group games keep everyone busy and having a good time.
  1. Sports

    • Any basic team sports such as rugby, soccer or football can be played by a group on a beach, says the Youthwork Practice website. Lawn games also adapt well. Try bringing a croquet or bocce ball set on your group beach trip for a low-impact sport that people of all ages can participate in. If the sand at the beach is packed hard enough, you may be able to play tennis or racquet ball as well.

    Frisbee

    • The simple flying plastic disc known as a Frisbee is perfect for playing games on the beach. Try tag, where an unmoving player tries to make someone else "it" by hitting her with a soft foam disc. For a non-competitive game, just throw the disc back and forth, recommends Activity Village. Flying discs also work well as an item to exchange in a relay race. Try spacing players out in a row and seeing which team can throw the Frisbee to the end of the line the fastest.

    Volleyball

    • Volleyball is one of the most popular beach group games. If your group will include children or people with limited mobility who lack the strength needed to make dives for a flying volleyball, try playing the game with a beach ball. For an extra challenge, require each team member to hit the ball before it is sent back over the net, according to the Activities for Learning website. Alternatively, have players sit and use a low net or a section of rope in place of a high volleyball net.

    Watermelon Polo

    • For a fun water game that works in relatively shallow water, try watermelon polo. Coat a watermelon or beach ball with petroleum jelly or another slippery substance and split players into two teams, says Fun Attic. Drop the watermelon between the two teams and have them push, roll or slide it to a designated point, such as a stationary teammate or a point on the shore. Players can't lift or carry the watermelon. The slippery substance will also make the players slippery, making the grappling for the melon harder.
