Games to Play Indoors With a Family

Indoor games and activities that the whole family can enjoy are great on those rainy or cold days. They can provide a family with an opportunity to bond and have fun. Playing indoor games as a family also allows children to use their imagination and creativity while they learn new concepts.
  1. Guessing Game

    • Look in magazines for pictures of everyday objects, such as dogs, cats, basketballs, toys or food. Cut the pictures out and glue them onto 3-by-5 cards. Place the cards in a box and mix them up. One person takes a card from the box and says words that describe the object without saying what it is. Everyone else has to guess what the object is.

    Family Match-up Word game

    • Write down 10 names of family and friends on a piece of paper. For example, write down "Dad," "Mom," "Brother" and "Cousin Kathy." Then write down a few words that best describe each person. Write each name and word on its own 3-by-3-inch piece of card stock. For each pair, write a color-coded "X" so that you know which two cards are supposed to be a match. For example, the card with "Mom" and the card with the word that describes her might have an orange "X" on each one. Mix the cards up and place them face down on a flat surface. Each player takes turns flipping over two cards to see if a match can be made.

    Quick Draw Art Game

    • Have someone who won't be playing in the game write down famous sayings or song lyrics on separate pieces of paper. Place the pieces of paper in a hat. If there are young kids playing, write down names of objects or animals that they can draw instead. The first player to go chooses a piece of paper from the cup. He draws clues to help the other players guess what the saying, object or phrase is. Each player has only two minutes to get the other players to guess correctly. If someone guesses correctly, the player doing the drawing gets one point.

    American Idol

    • Put on your own episode of "American Idol." Kids and parents can take turns being the judges and contestants. Put together your own unique outfit and you can either go with songs that you already know by memory or download lyrics online to any of your favorite songs. Dance moves to go along with each song are a great touch. Each player should practice some choreography in the mirror before taking her turn.
