Logic Games & Techniques

People have entertained themselves with logic games for at least hundreds of years, if not longer, as records of Old English and Norse riddles attest. Currently, logic games are used for entertainment and sometimes as a part of placement exams. The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is one example of a test that uses logic games. There are some basic techniques to finding the solution to logic problems.
  1. Riddles

    • Riddles are statements or questions that involve meaning that lies just below the surface. The person solving the riddle must determine what the statement or question refers to, or what the real meaning is, based on information the riddle provides. It is not uncommon for riddle statements to rhyme.

    Logic Puzzles

    • Logic puzzles are presented scenarios that must be solved. One example of is the logic grid puzzle, where the puzzle solver is provided with several categories and several options within each category. Several clues are provided to assist in discovering how the categories are linked together. The puzzle solver creates a grid chart to help her solve the puzzle.

    Anagrams

    • In anagram puzzles, the puzzle solver is provided with two words. The puzzle solver must figure out how to make two new words from the letters provided in the original words. Some puzzles have two specific words that must be found. Anagram puzzles share some similarities with crossword puzzles.

    Create a Diagram

    • One of the best things you can do to solve a logic game is to create a diagram of what is being asked. This is particularly useful for any game involving linear logic. Making a chart or mapping out the clues provided may help you see clues you have missed and keep track of details and pieces you have solved.

    General Techniques

    • Logic games frequently try to trick you. Most require you to read between the lines and think outside of the box. Read the logic game through once to get the big picture. Determine exactly what it is the logic game is looking for or asking. Note all the clues you are given. Then go back through the puzzle and focus on each detail and clue, piecing them together until you come to the final outcome. Always ask yourself, "What else?"
