"I Went on a Picnic..."
Have the players sit in a circle. The first player starts by saying, "I went on a picnic and I packed some sandwiches." The next player repeats the sentence and adds a food item of his choice. Play continues around the circle with each player adding an item of food to the list. The foods can be silly or sensible. If a player forgets an item when repeating the list he is out of the game. The winner is the last person to memorize all of the foods.
What's Missing?
Some advance preparation is needed for this game. Load a tray with items of food and cover it with a cloth. Use random items of food from the kitchen, or focus on a theme such as different vegetables or types of candy. Give everyone two minutes to stare at the tray and try to memorize the items. Take the tray away, remove one item and replace the tray. Have them stare at it for another minute to work out which item is missing. Have them write their answers on pieces of paper then reveal the answer and see how many players were correct.
Alternatively, cover the tray after one minute and have everyone write down as many items as they can remember and see who has memorized the most.
Make a List
This game works well if you are planning a food-themed event focusing on a particular culture or country. Choose a food-based topic and have everyone make a list of as many types of a certain kind of food as possible. For example, if you are holding an Italian-themed event, have players make a list of as many different types of pasta as they can think of within a set time frame. The winner is the person with the most items on their list. Other suggestions are types of fruit, vegetables, beans, herbs, candies, ice-cream flavors, pizza toppings or salad dressings --- the possibilities are endless.
Name Six
Before the game begins, prepare a pile of cards with general food topics written on them, such as vegetables, fruit, pulses, dairy foods, fish or snacks. Have the players sit in a circle. Depending on how large the group is, set a timer for three to six minutes. One player starts by selecting a card from the pile. She then tries to name six items within her selected food category. When she finishes, the next player takes a turn and tries to name six more without repeating any items named previously. Play continues until the timer rings. Anyone who failed to name six items or who repeated an item is out. Another topic is selected and play continues until only one player is left and she is the winner.
