Fun Word Games to Play

Word games are fun and can increase your vocabulary as well. In addition, they are appealing because they can be played by adults and children alike. Many different types of word games exist, including board games, applications for smart phones, word searches and crossword puzzles.
  1. Board Games

    • Scrabble, Boggle, and Banagrams are some of the most popular word board games. Each of these games has something different to offer. Scrabble is a game that rewards having a strong vocabulary. Boggle is a game that rewards creativity. In addition, Banagrams is a game that rewards speed. Each of these games can be played with multiple people and can be customized depending upon the experience and skill of the participants.

    Applications for Smart Phones

    • With the prevalence of smart phones, word games are becoming popular on smart phones. On the iPhone, several different word games have received high rankings. Among these are 'Words With Friends', Crostix, and Jumboline Lite. On Droid devices, Word Feud, Word Scrambler, and Word Up have received good reviews. These games are unique in that they can be played on the go and with other people even if you are not in proximity with them.

    Word Searches

    • The word search is a basic concept. Words are arranged horizontally, vertically and diagonally. After hiding the words, they are surrounded by random letters on all sides. At the bottom or off to the side, a list of the words hidden is given and the players job is to find all the hidden words. Word Searches can be customized to suit the user's desires. This makes them a good and education tool for children.

    Crossword Puzzles

    • Crossword puzzles can be found in most newspapers on a daily or weekly basis. The crossword puzzle is designed by asking a series of questions that can be answered with one word or a short phrase. Half of the questions have their answer recorded vertically, while the other half will have their questions answered horizontally. The answers to the questions are interspersed where they share letters. The objective is to fill in the questions with the correct answers until the puzzle is completely full. Like the word search, this game can be completely customized to ask whatever questions you would like.
