Charades
Charades can be fun for the whole family. This game is typically played with two teams, where one member of each team silently acts out a particular word or phrase. You can use any categories such as "song titles," "movie titles," or "famous people." Each team gets a certain amount of time to guess what their team member is acting out. If they can't guess within the pre-determined time, the opposing team has a chance to guess what it was. If children are playing, keep the categories simple so that they will be able to guess as well as act out the phrases.
Group Stories
Another game that's fun for everyone is group story telling. Have everyone sit in a circle. The object of the game is that everyone adds to the story to make it complete. For example, the first person starts with "A cat was walking down the street", the next person adds a little more to the story such as "and a dog started to chase the cat." The next person adds more to the story and it keeps going around the circle as the story gets more interesting. The story ends after going around the circle three times or until everyone starts laughing, whichever comes first.
Board and Card Games
If you have any board games, a rainy day is always a good time to get them out of the closet. Scrabble, Monopoly, Checkers or Risk are popular board games -- and there are thousands of others available for varying tastes and ages of players -- that will keep people entertained while waiting for the rain to stop. Card games are also a fun option. "Concentration" can be played by everyone competing to see who has the best memory, and "Go Fish" is a classic kids' card game that's perfect to keep them busy for a while.
Hot Seat
Hot Seat is played with one person sitting in a chair facing the rest of the group. One person is designated to come up with a word in a specific category. For example if the category is movies, the word could be "cinematography." The person writes it down and shows it to the group. The group gives hints and clues to the person in the hot seat. The person in the hot seat can ask questions and the people giving clues can only answer with "colder" or "hotter" to let the person know if they are close to guessing the word or not. Once he guesses it, a new person can be put in the hot seat. Each person gets a chance in the hot seat. It can also be played with a timer so that the person has to guess the word in a certain amount of time.
