Reading Board Games

In classrooms, toys and board games are an essential part of the educational curriculum. Board games are not only fun and interactive, but they help in skill development. Oftentimes, when the fun stops, so does the education. Entertainment through reading board games keeps the learning process exciting. Physical, cognitive and language skills are also developed through experimenting with reading board games.
  1. Blurt!

    • The objective of "Blurt!" is for a player to be the first to move their pawn all the way around the board. During each turn, a reader reads the definition of a word as found in a children's dictionary. The first person to blurt out the name of the word successfully gets to move their pawn forward according to the number of spaces rolled on a dice. There are no penalties for guessing incorrectly. The player to the reader's left goes next and a new round begins. "Blurt!" is an educational children's game that helps improve vocabulary.

    Learning Games: Short and Long Vowel Sounds

    • "Learning Games: Short and Long Vowel Sounds" is a four-board game design with the goal of teaching short and long vowel sounds with nursery rhymes. Each game has a total of 25 picture cards. When a card is drawn, the player moves to the corresponding vowel sound. The first player to reach the end is the winner. This game is best suited for two to four players.

    Tri-Words

    • "Tri-Words" is game designed to test a player's ability to make words out of randomly drawn "Tri-tiles." Players are awarded points for their words. The five-sided triangular pieces (called Tri-titles) consist of letters and wild cards (designated by stars). Once a player has created the best possible word with his randomly drawn tiles, her points are tallied and it is the next person's turn. This game is best played with two to six players.

    Cooking Up Sentences

    • The objective of "Cooking Up Sentences" is to move around the board trying to collect words card so grammatically sentences can be constructed. The players move around the board using a spinning wheel. This game follows the theme of a chef "cooking up" sentences. The sentences do not have to make sense in order to be grammatical. The player with the most grammatical sentences at the end of the game wins.
