Video Games
For older girls, video games provide a lot of character creation and customization. "Dragon Age: Origins" is a role-playing video game made by BioWare. The game follows the life of a Grey Warden, who is ordained to fight darkspawn monsters. Upon starting a new game, you will be prompted by a character creation page. Character customization allows you to choose your gender, race (human, elf, dwarf), class (mage, rogue, warrior), skin and makeup color, choice of tattoo, hairstyle and hair color, eye shape and color, nose, mouth, jaw, cheek, neck, ear and even voice. The game also allows you to choose from six different background origins. The main character is a silent lead, and always has a list of different responses to choose from when interacting, allowing the player to role-play even more.
Similar games that have a dialogue list to choose from, as well as a character creation page where you choose your gender, race, face and hair, are "Fallout 3," "Fallout New Vegas," " Mass Effect 1 and 2" and "Oblivion."
Make Believe
Obviously, in the world of make-believe, a child can make up her own character and customize her in a way that no technology could match. With make-believe, she can craft her character's appearance, outlook, habits and life. Further the growth of her imagination by encouraging her to write down or draw what she envisions her character looking like, what her character's demeanor is, and even things that her character likes. Consider it live-action role-playing.
Online Games
Online games, such as "Eve Online," "My Games 4 Girls," " Phantasy Star," "Character Dress Up" and various Facebook game applications allow girls to create their own characters with personalized appearance, clothes and actions. One of the more prominent games that allow a girl to create her own character is "Eve Online," which not only allows for the character's physical customization, but also revolves around the social interactions of the character.
Dolls
Younger girls can make their own characters by drawing a picture of a character they would like to be, cutting it out and pasting it on a card. Playing with Barbie dolls, baby dolls and other plastic dolls can also serve the same purpose for younger girls.
